The goal of the Angevine Middle School Latino Boys Leadership Skills Group is to help each other graduate from high School.
The group of 15 youth meet each Wednesday at 7:30am (yes, that's one hour before school starts!) to talk about issues that are important to them, learn leadership skills, and plan group activities.
Each year the group takes a leadership retreat to the mountains, organizes activities for the Lafayette Cesar Chavez Celebration, educates each other and the school community about Latino culture, goes on eduational (and fun) field trips, and makes presentations in the community about the group.
Students join the group for many of the same reasons that others join gangs: to feel like they belong, to have status, to socialize, to help each other out, and to earn money.
Many LBLS group members have gone on to attend college after graduating from high school.
